COMMUNITY IS FREEDOM

I am everything. I observe I process, I spit out the glitter.

When I have something to say I write songs.

When I feel like connecting to people I perform.

When I’m feeling introverted I draw and write poetry.

I’m super grateful for all my outlets.

Creativity leads a community.

I love being surrounded by like minded people because it created a safe space for self exploration. There’s always music and art to showcase who we are, like a lighthouse.

COMMUNITY IS EVERYTHING

Yeah having a community feels awesome but also from an evolutionary perspective, it’s why we can live in cities and go to outer space.

Humans have the gift of imagination and storytelling which lets us create ideals that large groups of people can get behind. I can connect to someone that I’ve never met if they also love drag and club music. The reason we’re at the top of the food chain is because of communication.

I’m in a few communities, but my favourite one right now is the club kids party scene. I absolutely love the energy of people dancing and sweating together. There’s lots of rave lewks, drag, bare skin, electronic music, power pop, just anything that’s bold and original.  I find it’s naturally queer but not exclusively. People are very compassionate and honest and I think that’s why they’re so sensitive to pronouns and political issues. It’s club with heart.

I’d like to think I’m giving my community a soundtrack. If I can get people dancing fearlessly I’ve done my job.

I think communities have become even stronger in the recent year.

We need to stick together to fight the hatred and division in the world. And that doesn’t mean just agreeing with each other day, it means learning, talking out issues, and evolving.

I can’t tell you how many political performances I’ve seen this year, it gives me hope.

My community inspires me constantly. That’s why I had everyone send me their videos for ‘Get Over It.’ I wanted to make a music video that showcased the people who make me strong enough to sing about loving myself, quirks and all. And seeing them dance and dress up and express themselves is just the best gift ever.

There are so many communities in LA I think that’s why people feel lost and alone when they first arrive. But once you find yours the whole city unfolds like a sparkly spider web.

I don’t think people are purposefully divided but LA’s so big it’s easy not be aware of other communities. I think it’s good to explore and get out of your scene, see what else is going on and get a new perspective, like life.

I’ve lived in a lot of cities and I always find my community by going out to events I’m interested in, like cabaret shows. Then I meet the people performing and organising it and ask them what else I should go to, personal recommendations are always the best.

It’s easy to dance with strangers in a club setting and it helps me make friends. When moving to a city you have to give to receive, so it’s a lot of going out, seeing peoples shows, and time investment. A community is about support, and in my performance-based community, that means showing up.

The best thing about being part of a creative community is love, acceptance, and constant learning. I feel alive.

I do find a lot of people are realising their phones give them anxiety and it’s cool to see people purposefully not check their phones at an event, even though they might feel awkward, it helps spark new conversation. It’s all about practice.

My advice is to find a balance of time spent alone and out with people. Gotta charge that battery! It’s important to take in new information whilst keeping your boundaries. It’s equally as important to let everything go and party with strangers because you never know what beautiful moments can occur.

This year I’ve learned not to take stuff personally, but see everything as a learning experience. My practised positive attitude is survival, it reminds me to focus on the fun shit.
